Leadership Detroit Mentoring Opportunity

Leadership Detroit has established a mentorship initiative to engage graduates of the program. This initiative was developed in response to graduates and their desire to share their experience with future leaders of our region.  The initiative is also part of the Detroit Regional Chamber's 2011 Mackinac Policy Conference 'to-do" list. Get Involved Now.

Mission Statement

Develop opportunities for Leadership Detroit graduates to mentor youth and young adults attending college between the ages of 21 and 26. The desired outcomes are to improve college admission and attainment of college degrees, and to retain talent in the region.

Mentoring Guidelines

This unique opportunity will engage program participants in a deeper understanding and practice of leadership skills. Mentors will provide a minimum of 4 hours per month to a single or small group of students. Students will learn about their mentors’ position, leadership style and how one may become successful as a leader in Southeast Michigan.  The mentor relationship will serve as an invaluable resource for participants and is designed such that both mentors and students will receive intrinsic value from the relationship.

Mentoring Commitment

The mentoring relationship will be for a minimum of three months, but may continue beyond the program period if desired.  The monthly time commitment is between 4-6 hours per month.  Mentors will be matched for compatible professional background and interest. Mentoring is broadly defined as activities such as job shadowing, invitations to events, advising, and one-on-one meetings

Support for Mentoring

Leadership Detroit in collaboration with program partners will be responsible for providing the necessary support to mentors and their mentees, including:

  • Pairing of mentors with mentees
  • Mentor orientation meeting and meet and greet
  • Mentoring handbook for both parties
  • Troubleshooting mentoring concerns
  • Program review and feedback

Background on our Partners

The University Partners Program

University Partners Student Leadership Program is an inter-institutional higher education leadership development initiative, in collaboration with Leadership Detroit, a program of the Detroit Regional Chamber. The mission of the initiative is to catalyze change in Southeast Michigan Region through engaged and informed emerging young leaders.  Participating institutions include Lawrence Technological University, Marygrove College, University of Detroit Mercy, University of Michigan-Dearborn, University of Windsor, and Wayne State University.

The program offers students the foundation needed for a lifelong commitment to social change and advocacy. Through the program students have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, learn facilitation and communication skills, and establish a network of professionals in careers such as health care, education, arts and culture, business, and others.

Successful applicants of UP will be exposed to key issues that affect metropolitan Detroit (e.g. education, politics, and economics) and will learn to challenge and build upon current solutions to bring about positive, long term change in the community through informed leadership. In addition to learning about significant area issues at various locations across the region, participants will be introduced to leadership models and will create a leadership action plan as the culminating project of the eight month program (October - May).

Discover. Engage. Transform. Internship Program

The Detroit Regional Chamber's Leadership Detroit and Intern in Michigan initiatives joined forces to create a new program that educates interns on why Michigan - particularly the metro Detroit region - is the ideal place to live and work. The Discover. Engage. Transform. (D.E.T.) program is intended to support young adults, serving as summer interns in participating private and public sector organizations, by providing education and knowledge of the region and opportunities to network with professionals outside of their workplace. Leadership development opportunities are provided to the young professionals through a mentorship program in partnership with Leadership Detroit. The program runs between June and  August of each year and attracts approximately 80 interns that are placed in over 20 organizations in Southeastern Michigan.
