Dave Bing
Former Mayor, City of Detroit
Dave Bing is the former mayor for the city of Detroit, retired NBA basketball player and founder of The Bing Group. Under his administration, Bing helped improve city services such as public safety, blight removal and the city’s bus system. He also oversaw the construction of Detroit’s $60-million Public Safety Headquarters.
Prior to his election as Detroit’s 62nd mayor, Bing served as president and chairman of The Bing Group, an automotive supply corporation. Under his tenure, the company was recognized as one of the nation’s top minority-owned companies by Black Enterprise magazine. A former NBA All-Star, Bing was drafted to the Detroit Pistons as the team’s No. 1 pick in 1966. He was inducted into the Michigan Hall of Fame in 1984. Bing earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and an honorary doctorate of laws degree from Syracuse University.
