Vickie Thomas serves the City of Detroit as Communications Director in the office of Mayor Mike Duggan. Thomas took the position after signing off as City Beat and Morning Drive Reporter for WWJ Newsradio 950 in 2021 after an illustrious 30-year career.
Thomas attended Michigan State University and graduated from Wayne State University, with a degree in broadcast journalism. She was the first African American woman in radio broadcasting inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 2019.
Throughout her radio career, she earned awards from Detroit Press Foundation, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Michigan Associated Press, the National Association of Black Journalists, and many others.
Thomas served as Region II Director of the National Association of Black Journalists for five years. During her tenure, she led the effort to bring the organization’s national convention to Detroit in 2018 and received the NABJ President’s Award.
