Earned Sick Time Act Enacted: What to Know From the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity

On Feb. 20, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed HB 4002, which amends the Earned Sick Time ACT (ESTA), and SB 8, which amends minimum wage, heeding the business community’s advice and concerns.

While the legislative changes are not representative of the entire business community’s wish list, the Legislature’s actions will make employer compliance with the new acts much more bearable.

With the bills now in effect as of Feb. 21, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has compiled a FAQ list for employers, including which employers are covered by the act, which employees are eligible to receive earned sick time, and more.
