As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2025, the Detroit Region is gearing up to honor the legacy of one of America’s most esteemed civil rights leaders. This special day provides an opportunity for communities to come together and reflect on Dr. King’s profound impact on our society. Whether through educational programs, inspiring speeches, or cultural events, there are numerous ways to celebrate and remember Dr. King’s contributions to justice and equality. Here are some notable events and activities you can participate in to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the Detroit Region.

Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation | Jan. 18-20 | 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Celebrate the life and lasting legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through three days of featured programs and performances, Jan. 18-20 at The Henry Ford.

WSU’s 25th-annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration  

Wayne State University | Jan. 20 | Virtual 

Watch the recording of Wayne State University’s annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., including a keynote speech from Rev. Frederick Douglass Haynes III, senior pastor at Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas. This event marks the 25th-anniversary of the university’s MLK tribute and the 60th anniversary of the historic voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery that King led in 1965.

MLK, Jr. Day at The Wright Museum Annual Celebration 

Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History | Jan. 20 | 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 

Enjoy a profound and inspiring celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy at The Wright. This year’s theme is “The Strength to Dream,” which highlights King’s courage and determination in facing adversity.

2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 

Detroit Historical Museum | Jan. 20 | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Join the Detroit Historical Museum in celebrating the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  This year’s program is Remembering the Life of Freedom Rider Viola Liuzzo, which will include a few panel discussions.  There will be storytelling and arts and crafts for guests’ engagement, as well.  Explore the museum through a history hunt to learn more about the events that Dr. King experienced from 1955 through 1968. End the day of learning and celebrating and join the museum in singing happy birthday.

40th Annual Southfield Peace Walk Celebration  

Hope United Methodist Church | Jan. 20 | 9 a.m. 

The City of Southfield and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force will host the 40th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Peace Walk Celebration on Monday, Jan. 20. This year’s theme will be “Social Justice Through Equality, Inclusion and Diversity.”

11 a.m. MLK Program at Southfield Pavilion with Taste Fest

Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 

Motown Museum | Jan. 20 | 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Join Motown Museum for an intergenerational tour experience honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Learn about Motown’s involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King’s speech recordings, and the Black Forum Label.

Fox Theatre | Jan. 20 | 4 p.m. 

The Rainbow PUSH organization will host the Let Freedom Ring celebration, a free public event that commemorates the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth. The event highlights six individuals who exude the spirit of Dr. King.
