Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s latest $3 billion road funding proposal came with plenty that should concern Michigan’s business or any businesses that might think about making Michigan their home.

Details on where that money would come from were scant in the governor’s press release, but Crain’s Senior Reporter David Eggert reported that discussions in Lansing have focused on a hike in the corporate income tax of up to 8 percent.

Another thing the governor didn’t say is that Michigan’s corporate income tax applies to far more than the biggest corporations. The Detroit Regional Chamber points out that 87% of Michigan’s C-corporations – those subject to that tax – have fewer than 100 employees, a far cry from “massive.” And they employ half the private-sector workers in the state.
